Among the world’s great cycling destinations, few offer more than the Mosel and Saar River valleys in Germany. During this point-to-point bicycle tour you will discover a stunning region, highlighted by the enchanting countryside, fairytale castles, perfect picture wineries, award-winning vineyards on impossibly steep slopes, and historic medieval towns and villages. The Rhine’s peaceful little sisters, the Moselle and Saar rivers, meander from one picturesque village to another, offering unsurpassed views from their exceptional bike paths and lanes. As you pedal through this magical region, you will relive its history, visit culturally rich cities, immerse yourself in pristine nature, meet local winemakers, and enjoy the fruits of their labor: exceptional Mosel and Saar River Rieslings and more!

After each day’s ride, you’ll be warmly welcomed at a carefully chosen, locally owned hotel or guest house. Your luggage will already be there, delivered by van, so you can freshen up before heading out to enjoy dinner at your leisure. In the morning, fuel up with a hearty, included breakfast before setting off for another day of cycling and discovery.

Accompanied by a competent, professional, and multilingual tour director you and your fellow travelers will visit interesting sights and places on the daily cycling tours. During the bike tour, your guide will explain the local history and culture behind the things you encounter along the way.

DAY 1

Arrival in Cochem

Welcome to Cochem, a storybook town nestled along the Mosel River. Ease into your adventure with a stroll past half-timbered houses, charming wine cellars, and stunning views of Reichsburg Castle towering above. Feeling curious? Visit the quirky Mustard Museum or the secretive Bundesbank Bunker. Whether you explore or simply unwind by the river with a glass of local Riesling, Cochem is the perfect place to begin your journey.

DAY 2

Cochem – Beilstein – Zell (23 mi. / 37 km)

After breakfast, pedal to Beilstein, one of the Mosel’s most enchanting, historic villages where you can wander the romantic ruins of Castle Metternich. Continue past the breathtaking Bremmer Calmont, Europe’s steepest vineyard, before arriving in Zell, a wine village famous for its “Zeller Schwarze Katz.” Cap off your day with a private tasting of Mosel wines at a celebrated local winery, an unforgettable introduction to the region’s rich wine heritage and landscape.

DAY 3

Zell – Bernkastel-Kues (27 mi. / 43 km)

Today’s scenic ride takes you from Zell to the charming village of Traben-Trarbach, known for its elegant Art Nouveau architecture. Continue through Kröv, a lively wine town celebrated for its Kröver wines, before arriving in Bernkastel-Kues. This fairytale village, with its medieval half-timbered houses and cobbled square, is a dream for photographers. We’ll end the day with a leisurely stroll through the heart of Bernkastel, soaking in its rich history and charm.

DAY 4

Maar-Mosel Rail Trail from Daun to Bernkastel – Kues (36 mi. / 58 km)

Prepare for our memorable “guest-favorite” ride along the Maar-Mosel Rail Trail! You will surely enjoy this relaxing descent through volcanic landscapes, tunnels, and across bridges with views of crater lakes, or maars. The Eifel region’s “young” volcanoes—just 12,000 years old—add a dramatic backdrop. We’ll pause for an included authentic German lunch at one of the quaint village restaurants known for hearty regional dishes and warm hospitality.

DAY 5

Bernkastel-Kues – Schweich (34 mi. / 55 km)

Cycle through breathtaking vineyard landscapes en route to Schweich, passing renowned wine villages like Piesport,home to the legendary Piesporter Goldtröpfchen. We’ll stop to enjoy a tasting of this elegant, fruit-forward Riesling. Ride on to Trittenheim, nestled in a scenic Mosel bend, with views of the Laurentiuskapelle among the vines. In Schweich, we will spend the night in a charming guesthouse set amongst the vines.

DAY 6

Schweich – Roman Sites of Trier – Saarburg (24 mi. / 38 km)

Today’s ride begins in Schweich, tracing the Mosel River to Trier, Germany’s oldest city. You’ll explore remarkable Roman landmarks—the Porta Nigra, Imperial Baths, the Roman Bridge, and the grand Cathedral. From Trier, you will follow a serene riverside path to Konz, where the Saar meets the Mosel. The journey continues along the peaceful Saar River to charming Saarburg, known for its midtown waterfall and medieval castle ruin, an unforgettable finale to a day rich in history and natural beauty.

DAY 7

Saarburg – Merzig (22 mi. / 35 km + optional hike)

Your final ride is a scenic gem, winding along the tranquil Saar River to the breathtaking Saarschleife, a dramatic hairpin bend best viewed from the Cloef overlook, high above the forested valley and reachable by a moderate hike. Pause to soak in this unforgettable panorama before continuing to Mettlach, home to the elegant Villeroy & Boch ceramic outlet, perfect for browsing or picking up a keepsake. From there, enjoy a gentle final stretch to Merzig, nestled beneath rolling hills.

Merzig Departure

Enjoy breakfast at our hotel before departing for your journey home or to your next destination.

Arrival in Cochem: The closest airport to the start of the tour is Frankfurt. From there you can board a train for the journey to Cochem with a transfer in Koblenz. Directions to reach the hotel will be provided as the departure date approaches.

Departure from Merzig: There is a train station where you can board a train to Frankfurt airport.

Bicycles: Included in your tour price is a 24 Speed touring Bike, ideal for the terrain you will cycle on.

E-bikes are available for a surcharge. Keep in mind that e-bikes are heavier than touring bikes and require good bike handling skills. We do not recommend them for novice cyclists.

Bicycle Locks: All bicycles are outfitted with locks. Please use them whenever you plan to leave your bicycle unattended for any length of time. You will be liable for damage or theft of the bicycle if it is stolen during an excursion because it was not locked properly.

Physical Fitness and Bike Handling: To participate in the biking part of the tour, it is important that you are in good physical condition and have the necessary bike handling skills. Group riding experience is encouraged but not a requirement. This tour is rated difficulty level 1-2 so novice cyclists may occasionally find it challenging. All guests are expected to keep pace with the group which travels at 10-12 mph. Guests who cannot maintain that pace will be asked to ride on their own, with maps/route sheets provided. E-bikes are also an option (for a surcharge) but need to be requested prior to the start of the tour. On this tour, we will occasionally need to share the road with car traffic, and we will have to cross busy intersections. The weather is variable, it may not always be sunny, and the winds may not always be calm. Even under poor weather conditions, you should feel safe and able to cover the day’s distance on your bike. If for any reason, a guest cannot complete the day’s ride, the guest can return to the hotel at their own expense.
